Johnson City Reclaimed Ranch House
Johnson City, Texas
Built in 1885, this Johnson City homestead has never been sold.
It has been passed from one generation of the same family to the next for nearly a century and a half, carrying with it stories, memories and pieces of Texas history that could never be replaced.
The original pioneer home was built in two separate sections, with a breezeway added later to bring them together. It sits along Hickory Creek, on land tied to the earliest days of the Texas Hill Country, where settlers and soldiers once traveled during the battles and struggles surrounding the fight for Texas.
When it came time to rebuild, preserving that history was not an afterthought. It became the foundation of the entire project.
The original stone was carefully taken down by hand, piece by piece, and preserved. Every bit of it is being reused throughout the new home, both inside and outside. The walls may be new, but the stone surrounding them has been part of this property since the 1800s.
Original roofing material was reclaimed and given a second life beneath the porch soffits and overhangs. Even the old front porch supports were saved and incorporated into the custom fireplace cabinetry inside the home. Pieces that once supported the original house will now live on as part of the new one.
That connection between old and new continues throughout the design.
Aged bronze roofing and real copper details give the exterior a timeless Hill Country character. An Andersen window package, Western Window Systems sliders and a custom Cantera front door bring modern performance while respecting the architecture and history of the property.
Inside, the home is being built for the way this family will live today, while never forgetting where it came from.
Engineered wood flooring brings warmth throughout the interiors. Direct-vent gas fireplaces and traditional wood-burning fireplaces create gathering places that feel right at home in a property with this much history.
A custom eucalyptus steam-room shower with built-in bench adds a private spa experience to the primary suite. A dedicated movie theater gives the family a completely modern place to gather, while a custom pool by Blue Springs Pools extends the home into the landscape surrounding Hickory Creek.
Carrier Comfort Systems HVAC installed by Wayne's Air quietly brings modern comfort and efficiency to a home whose story began long before air conditioning, electricity or modern construction existed.
Currently under construction and nearing completion, this project is becoming something much bigger than a new custom home.
It is the preservation of a family story.
The same land. The same family. The same stone.
More than 140 years later, the house is being given a new chapter without erasing the ones that came before it.
And there is still much more to come.
